KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to become the new PKR president after winning the contest unopposed in the

PKR supreme council 2018 election.

Anwar’s name remained the sole candidate for the presidency when nominations closed this evening.

The outcome was announced by PKR election committee chairman Datuk Rashid Din at 5.30pm.

“Confirmation of his win will be discussed at the Election Committee meeting and will be announced to the media on August 8,” he told reporters at PKR’s headquarters here on Sunday.

The outcome thus ends speculation that Anwar could see a challenge by PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohd Azmin Ali.

Instead, Azmin looks set to take on Rafizi Ramli in a heated contest for the deputy presidency.

The PKR vice-presidency will see 12 candidates vie for the posts. They are Selayang Member of Parliament William Leong Jee Keen; Puchong PKR member, Michael Tamil; Sungai Petani Member of Parliament Datuk Johari Abdul; Sungai Siput MP S. Kesavan; PKR Padang Serai member Prof Datuk Dr G Balasubramaniam; Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar; Kuala Langat MP Dr A Xavier Jeyakumar; former Batu MP Tian Chua; Tapah PKR member Vasantha Kumar; and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamarudin.

PKR election committee secretary, Ismail Yusof, said the headquarters will display the names of all eligible candidates and set aside three days to enable any appeals or objections to be filed.

After the three-day period, the candidates list will be finalised. The drawing of lots for candidates’ numbers will be held on August 19.

“The pictures and numbers of the candidates will be displayed on tablets which will be used during the voting process, as part of the e-voting system,” he said.
