Ooredoo Myanmar and ZTE Corporation signed an MOU to collaborate on 5G network development yesterday. The collaboration is part of Ooredoo’s network modernisation program and will ensure that Myanmar is ready for 5G.

The partnership will leverage the technical expertise of ZTE Corporation and support Ooredoo Myanmar’s efforts to provide a world-class telecom infrastructure for the people of Myanmar.

“Ooredoo is the first telecom operator in Myanmar to launch initiatives towards 5G development, which will unlock the next generation of wireless technology with high speeds, ultra-low latency and greater capacities,” Alok Verma, Acting CEO of Ooredoo Myanmar said, adding that 5G will enable new possibilities in mobility, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation and other industries.

To kick off the partnership, Ooredoo Myanmar and ZTE Corporation will be considering potential test environments to deploy Ooredoo’s 5G network. The test environments will be used to evaluate the performance of the 5G network and technology to ensure quality service is achieved once the network is operational.

5G is the future of wireless technology which designed to meet ever advancing and increasingly complex sets of performance requirements. It is about 100 times faster than 4G. It offers ultra-low latency, will catalyse mobility, industrial networking, remote healthcare, virtual reality and ultra-high-definition video.  5G will impact the entire mobile network and associated eco-system, from devices to radio access, IP core and into the cloud,” said Mei Zhonghua, senior vice president of ZTE Corporation.

In Myanmar, the groundwork currently is being laid for 5G technology as set out in the Myanmar National Broadband White Paper 2019 and Spectrum Roadmap 2019.

At the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, earlier this year, U Soe Thein of the Communications and Information Technology Ministry told the media that Myanmar will be ready to deploy 5G technology in 2-3 years.

Nevertheless, 5G has many shortcomings, such as the lack of handsets, insufficient spectrum and other requirements that mean it might be two or three years before it becomes available, U Soe Thein said.

If successful, Myanmar will trail most other countries by only a couple of years in launching 5G technology. Malaysia and Indonesia signed agreements with Huawei Co. in February to carry out 5G data infrastructure and tests, and Singapore, which is a regional leader in the technology, said in July that Singapore Telecommunications has teamed up with Ericsson to test 5G networks.
