RIDE-sharing application Grab announced that it would be deactivating 8,000 of its transport network vehicle services (TNVS) that have no provisional authority from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

In a statement by Grab Chief Executive Brian Cu on Monday, he said it was because the transport firm “acted in good faith” when it ordered its TNVS partners to comply with the LTFRB requirements before Friday, after the government-run transport agency opened 20,000 slots for TNVS in December.

However, Cu admitted that the loss of 8,000 active drivers was “painful” but hoped that the inconvenience was temporary.

“This will reduce the number of vehicles servicing our commuting public, thus inconveniencing many Filipinos,” Cu said in the statement. “We hope that this inconvenience will be temporary, as we anticipate new drivers — even those from the 8,000 — to take advantage of the 10,000 new slots for application starting June 10.”

“This is very painful for us, our drivers, and passengers, but it is Grab’s duty to help the LTFRB enforce our regulations,” he added.

In a message to reporters on Monday, Grab Government Communications manager Fiona Nicolas said that Grab has deactivated non-compliant and inactive drivers “slowly.”

In an advisory on Friday last week, the LTFRB said that the appointment slots for TNVS that were given out last December 17 would no longer be accepted by the end of business hours on Friday, but 10,000 slots would be opened for online applications by Monday next week.
