The embodiment of cool with haunting, gravelly vocals and original punk-rock style, Billie Eilish has redefined the contemporary pop star on her blistering path to stardom.
And now the teenage mover and shaker has cemented her place as an establishment leader, posting a banner Grammy night by sweeping the top four categories—the first woman and youngest artist to do so.
.
The 18-year-old’s phenomenal ascent saw Eilish named Billboard’s 2019 woman of the year—and for good reason.Within a matter of months, she dropped a number one album entitled

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, led the hot songs chart with her single “Bad Guy” and played a set on a prime stage at the Coachella music festival that was pure fire. The biggest globally renowned musician to emerge from Generation Z, the candid Eilish draws young fans with a personal social media presence and internet-speak fluency. And with a fashion sense as unique as her sound, Eilish is the kind of female star who refuses to let the sexualization of her body define her celebrity. At just 13, she dropped her debut bedroom-produced single “Ocean Eyes” on SoundCloud, the do-it-yourself streaming platform that has also brought a generation of young rappers to fame.

The gauzy synth-pop song about painful longing to reconnect with an ex—written and produced by Eilish’s primary creative collaborator, her brother Finneas O’Connell—quickly went viral. Interscope signed her at age 14—making the Californian a rare internet-age pop star to win big online and then see a label invest time and money in cultivating her talent over the long term. But despite the industry input,
.
Eilish appears to be a singular star whose only influencer is herself. She deftly imbues often morbid lyrical content—topics include death, depression, and fear over climate change—with tinges of irony and humor. The performer—who has cited grunge band  Nirvana as inspiration—delivers poetry in a breathy voice bordering on a whisper, layered over minimal beats akin to electronic music and southern hip-hop.Put on the spot, Eilish oozes eminent chill—though the nerves of adolescence sometimes peek through.
.
“We made this album in a bedroom,” she said backstage at the Grammys on Sunday after scooping five trophies, standing next to O’Connell, to whom she routinely gave the mic.“It’s really like anything is possible, actually,” she added with a wry giggle.Confused and gratefulThe superstar’s signature style features oversized sweatshirts and baggy pants, often paired with sunglasses and the garish extra-long nail extensions more often associated with rapper Cardi B.

On Grammy night, she wore an oversized Gucci pantsuit with glittering lime green accents—that matched her neon-dyed roots—and even sported a sheer black face mask on the red carpet. The star has described her body image as “toxic,” and spoken openly about mental health struggles—a growing movement in the music industry, which has lost scores of stars young and old to suicide and overdose.

“Wow, wow, wow, wow,” Eilish began her speech in accepting the award for “Bad Guy.”“So many other songs deserved this, I’m sorry.”Her 22-year-old brother later said, “We didn’t think this would ever win anything.”“We didn’t write an album to win awards. We wrote an album about depression, about suicidal thoughts, about climate change,” he continued.“We stand up here confused and grateful.

Win-win for womenThe young Eilish has flatly dismissed the industry’s habit of drumming up publicity and drama by pitting female stars against each other. She champions women as peers rather than rivals, emphasizing that the success of one performer does not steal from another.“Everybody’s always trying to make everybody compete,” she told the  Los Angeles Times  in 2019.
.
“They’re like, ‘Billie’s album might pass  Ariana’s.’”On Sunday, Eilish gave a shout-out to Grande, saying the pop royal’s album  thank u, next  should have won the night’s prestigious Album of the Year award. She’s also lauded fellow Album of the Year nominee Lana Del Rey, a masterful lyricist who, like Grande, went home empty-handed on Sunday.“I don’t want to hear that Billie Eilish is the new Lana Del Rey. Do not disrespect Lana like that!
.
That woman has made her brand so perfect for her whole career and shouldn’t have to hear that,” Eilish once said of the baroque pop troubadour whose languorous, deadpan 2019 album was hailed by many as the year’s best.“I don’t want to hear that somebody’s the new Billie Eilish in a couple of years.
.

”That prospect appears unlikely considering the superstar’s inimitable idiosyncrasies, raw talent and meteoric rise that now includes plenty of Grammys gold.“What’s next? I don’t know — be in this moment is all I’m thinking about,” she told reporters Sunday backstage. As the now-classic lyric from “Bad Guy” goes…. duh..

Early life

Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell[5] was born in Los Angeles, California, on December 18, 2001.[6] She is the daughter of actress and screenwriter Maggie Baird and actor Patrick O’Connell,[7][8] both of whom are also musicians.[9][10] Eilish is of Irish and Scottish descent.[11] She was raised in Los Angeles’ Highland Park neighborhood.[12][13] She was homeschooled and her mother taught her and her elder brother Finneas O’Connell basics of songwriting.[14] Eilish wrote her first song at age four, while Finneas had been writing and producing his own songs and performing with his band.[15] Their parents encouraged the siblings to express themselves and explore whatever they wanted, including art classes and acting.[9][14] Eilish had gone on some acting auditions, which she disliked. However, she enjoyed recording background dialogue for crowd scenes and worked on the films Diary of a Wimpy KidRamona and Beezus, and the X-Men series.[14] She performed at talent shows and joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus at age eight.[15][14]

In October 2015, Eilish recorded the song “Ocean Eyes“, written and produced by Finneas originally for his band, after her dance teacher asked them to write a song for a dance routine.[10][16] They released the song on SoundCloud. The record and Eilish received praise and promotion from various media outlets and marketers, including radio stations and music supervisors such as Beats 1KCRWBBC OneZane LoweJason KramerAnnie Mac, and Chris Douridas.[20] Finneas’s manager had reached out to him after he made “Ocean Eyes” to discuss Eilish’s potential.[9][21][22] In a deal arranged by Finneas, Apple Music signed Eilish to A&R company Platoon, which helps package artists before they get a major label deal.[9][21] Eilish then got a publicist, who connected her to the fashion company Chanel, and a stylist, both of whom helped shape her image.[9]

A music video for “Ocean Eyes” was released in March 2016.[9] By August 2016, Eilish had signed to the record label and artist management company The Darkroom, and imprint of Interscope Records.[9] Justin Lubliner, who signed Eilish to The Darkroom, developed her rollout as an artist, taking inspiration from the model of hip hop artists such as Travis Scott and Chance the Rapper, not relying on one big single and focusing on creating a “persona and distinct aesthetic”.[9][23] A video of Eilish performing a dance to “Ocean Eyes” was released in November 2016, and the song was re-released worldwide through Darkroom and Interscope.[19][24] That year, Eilish also released the single “Six Feet Under”, which premiered on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio show.[15][25] “Ocean Eyes” was certified platinum by the RIAA in September 2018[26] and peaked at number 84 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 2019.[27]

On January 14, 2017, Eilish released an EP with four remixes of “Ocean Eyes”.[28] Following the success of the “Ocean Eyes” remixes, Eilish released the single “Bellyache” on February 24, 2017,[29] with a video released in March 2017. That month, Eilish released the track “Bored” as part of the soundtrack to the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.[30] In March, Apple Music also showcased Eilish at the South by Southwest music festival.[21][17] In June 2017, Eilish released the single “Watch[31] with a follow-up single, “Copycat” released in July 2017, along with the announcement of her debut extended play, Don’t Smile at Me.[32] Each Friday in July, another single to the EP was added. These singles included “Idontwannabeyouanymore” and “My Boy”, both of which were certified gold by the RIAA. Don’t Smile at Me was released in August 2017.[33] The EP transformed Eilish “from pastel pop star to dark pop artist.”[9]

Eilish’s team worked with Spotify, which promoted her on its most popular playlist, “Today’s Top Hits”.[9] The Baffler described Eilish’s sound as fitting into the “streambait” genre consisting of largely “mid-tempo, melancholy pop” influenced by Lana del Rey, whose “singing style, bleakness, and the hip-hop influenced production” shaped the aesthetic.[34][9] Eilish’s commercial success expanded with her Spotify promotion.[9] In September 2017, Apple Music named Eilish their Up Next artist, which followed with a short documentary, a live session EP and an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s radio station Beats 1.[35] That month, the live EP titled Up Next Session: Billie Eilish was released. In December 2017, Eilish released her collaboration with American rapper Vince Staples titled “&Burn“, for a remix of “Watch” included on the expanded edition of the EP.[36]

When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was released on March 29, 2019.[55] Spotify launched a “multi-level campaign behind the album”, creating a multi-media playlist and “new product features” that Spotify stated “allow for vertical video content, custom assets, and editorial storylines all with the goal of creating more meaningful and engaging context for [Eilish’s] fans.”[21] In Los Angeles, Spotify set up a “pop-up enhanced album experience”, which included different artwork and a “multi-sensory” experience of each track for fans.[21][9] The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 as well as on the UK Albums Chart, making Eilish the first artist born in the 2000s to have a number one album in the United States, and the youngest female ever to have a number one album in the United Kingdom.[56][57] Upon the album’s debut, Eilish broke the record for most simultaneously charting Hot 100 songs by a female artist, with 14, after every song from the album, excluding “Goodbye”, charted on the Hot 100.[58] The fifth single from the album, “Bad Guy“, was released in conjunction with the album, and peaked at number one in the US, ending Lil Nas X‘s record-breaking 19 weeks at number one with “Old Town Road“.[59][60] She is the first artist born in the 2000s and the youngest artist since Lorde (with “Royals“) to have a number-one single.[61] A remix of the song featuring Justin Bieber was released in July 2019.[62][63]

Musical style, songwriting, and music videos

Avery Stone of Noisey described Eilish’s soprano vocals as “ethereal”,[74] and Maura Johnston of Rolling Stone characterized them as “whispery”.[75] Doreen St. Félix of The New Yorker opined that she has a “husky, slurring voice that she can thin out to reedy”.[76] Music critic Robert Christgau wrote that while Eilish is musically and commercially pop, her brand also “reminds us how amorphous [pop] has become”, describing her soprano as “too diminutive for vocal calisthenics”, adding that her “playful version of teen-goth angst” and “electro-saturated debut album” captivated a diverse audience.[77] Her music incorporates alternative pop,[78] dark pop,[79] EDM,[80] electropop,[78] indie pop,[81][78] and pop.[82]

Eilish and her brother Finneas collaborate on songwriting.[83][84] Eilish called Finneas her partner in making music.[83] He writes for her albums, produces her music and also performs with her on live shows.[85][83] Eilish and Finneas “like to completely make up things and become characters” and “have songs that are really fictional”.[84] Eilish said a number of the songs also derive from her and Finneas’ experiences.[84] They try to write “really interesting and conversational” lyrics: “We try to say stuff that doesn’t have to be that deep […] but you say something way deeper in a certain way that makes sense, but you haven’t really thought about.”[84] Finneas has stated when he writes songs for his sister, he aims to “write [songs] that I think she’ll relate to and enjoy singing and empathise with the lyrics and make her own”.[86] When he writes with Eilish, he tries “to help her tell whatever story she’s trying to tell, bounce ideas off of her, listen to her ideas”, and use a language that fits her voice telling the story.[86]

Eilish has wanted to direct her own music videos since she was 14. She was initially not given the opportunity due to lack of experience.[87] In 2019, she directed the video for her single “Xanny“.[88]

Influences

Eilish has said that stumbling upon “Runaway” by singer Aurora on YouTube is what inspired her to pursue music.[89][90] Hip hop music is Eilish’s favorite genre and biggest inspiration.[91] She has cited Tyler, the CreatorChildish Gambino and Avril Lavigne as major musical and style influences for her,[92][93] and other influences include Earl SweatshirtAmy WinehouseSpice Girls, and Lana Del Rey.[94][95][96][97] She has been compared in the media to Avril LavigneLorde and Del Rey,[98][99] the latter of whom she says she does not want to be compared to, stating, “That woman [Lana] has made her brand so perfect for her whole career and she shouldn’t have to hear that.”[100] She has also named Rihanna as an inspiration for her style choices, after she called fashion her “defense mechanism” during an acceptance speech.[101] In 2019, Eilish said she admired Ariana Grande for her vocal ability and felt she identified with her, adding that Grande’s album Thank U, Next inspired her to continue making music.[102][103][104]

Public image

Much of the media attention surrounding Eilish has revolved around her style, which consists primarily of baggy, ill-fitting clothing.[105][106][18] In 2017, Eilish stated that she likes dressing out of her comfort zone to feel like she grabs the attention of everyone around her.[107] Eilish states that she tries to be “really different from a lot of people”, and wears clothing opposite to what others are wearing. Aiming to “look memorable”, Eilish said she believes she “proved to people that I’m more important than they think”, and she is “kind of intimidating, so people will listen up.”[84] In 2019, Eilish appeared in a Calvin Klein ad, wherein she mentioned that she dresses in baggy clothes to prevent people from body-shaming her, stating: “Nobody can be like, ‘She’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat ass,’ ‘she’s got a fat ass.’ Nobody can say any of that because they don’t know.”[108]

In August 2019, Billie Eilish partnered with Apple to allow Apple Store customers to experiment with her song “You Should See Me in a Crown” in Music Lab sessions in its stores.[126] Eilish’s collaboration with the clothing company Siberia Hills[127][128] was met with controversy after it was revealed that the company had used plagiarized designs of fan art of the character Nozomi Tojo from Love Live!, drawn by artist Makoto Kurokawa, for Eilish’s clothing line.[129] The brand later clarified that Eilish herself had no knowledge of the plagiarism.[130][131]
