Jakarta. Six more people died from coronavirus in Indonesia on Tuesday, bringing the country’s death toll from Covid-19 to 55 as a worrisome trend continues where the number of deaths keeps beating the number of patients recovering from the disease.

In fact, no recovery was reported by the government’s Covid-19 Task Force on Tuesday.

“The number of recoveries is unchanged. It remains at 30 [same as yesterday],” task force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said in a daily video conference in Jakarta.

He mentioned that seven people died from the disease over the last two days, but a check on the task force statistics showed double citations on one fatality in South Sulawesi province.

However, the cumulative death toll is correctly put at 55, up from 49 yesterday.

Positive cases again grew at a faster pace by 107 to a total of 686 – the biggest single-day rise since the first positive cases were reported early this month. / BY :HERU ANDRIYANTO

SINGAPORE – The number of coronavirus cases will continue to rise in coming weeks, as some of the 200,000 overseas Singaporeans return home, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Wednesday (March 25).

He noted that the number of cases in Singapore has more than doubled in the past week, from 266 to a total of 558 currently.

“Almost 80 per cent of these new cases were imported, all from countries other than China even though we continued to see around 1,000 residents and long-term pass holders return from China in the past week,” he said.

As of Tuesday, there were more than 370,000 Covid-19 cases and over 16,500 fatalities from the disease worldwide, with the epicentre shifting from China to Europe.

In his ministerial statement in Parliament, Mr Gan said Singapore has slowed the spread of Covid-19 through a three-pronged approach: reducing importation, detecting and isolating cases early, and emphasising social responsibility and good personal hygiene habits.

SEOUL (NYTIMES) – No matter how you look at the numbers, one country stands out from the rest: South Korea.

In late February and early March, the number of new coronavirus infections in the country exploded from a few dozen, to a few hundred, to several thousand.

At the peak, medical workers identified 909 new cases in a single day, Feb 29, and the country of 50 million people appeared on the verge of being overwhelmed. But less than a week later, the number of new cases halved. Within four days, it halved again – and again the next day.

On Sunday (March 22), South Korea reported only 64 new cases, the fewest in nearly a month, even as infections in other countries continue to soar by the thousands daily, devastating healthcare systems and economies. Italy records several hundred deaths daily; South Korea has not had more than eight in a day.
