‘The 2019 Plague” Day 191
.
The daily figure beats the previous record of 973 on May 21.
New transmissions are expanding at an even faster pace before the country reaches the grim milestone of 30,000 cases.
It took 60 days for the country to hit the 10,000 mark, and only 21 days later the number of cases nationwide has surpassed 20,000. In the last 16 days, the figure has crossed 30,000.
“We have 464 more patients who have recovered in the 24-hour period to bring the total number of recoveries to 9,907. The death toll from the disease rose by 31 to 1,801,” National Covid-19 Task Force Spokesman Achmad Yurianto said in a daily video briefing in Jakarta.
He said probable cases at hospitals stand at 13,347 while more than 46,500 persons remain under surveillance for suspected coronavirus infections, but they are not hospitalized.
East Java, the current epicenter of the Indonesian outbreak, reported 286 new cases — more than double from the previous day — to take the total number of infections in the province to 5,835, including 463 deaths and 1,361 recoveries.
It’s closing in on Jakarta, who registered 104 new cases on Saturday to a total of 7,870.
The task force didn’t specifically explain about the sudden spike of coronavirus infections in the day. However, it has earlier predicted a surge in coronavirus cases within two weeks after Idul Fitri on May 24, when people ignored social distancing policy to meet relatives and friends in celebration of the most important holiday for Indonesian Muslims.
Moreover, mass testing capacity has increased significantly to over 10,000 per day since May 27.
Papua reported 87 new cases on Saturday and now has a total of 1,005 cases. The easternmost province, with a population of less than 4 million, is among nine provinces that have registered more than 1,000 cases.
All but five of the country’s 34 provinces reported new coronavirus cases on Saturday.
