About 35 jeepney drivers were forced to stay due to travel restrictions and have made jeepneys their home as the government banned public transport during the community quarantine to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus. Many of the jobless drivers have resorted to begging in the streets, displaying cardboard signs scrawled with pleas for money and food on their multi-colored jeepneys. (AP Photo/Aaron Favila)

The COVID-19 outbreak started in China’s Wuhan City in Hubei province in late 2019. The highly contagious respiratory illness is caused by a coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
