New lights are being installed on seven roads, with the most central on Kaysone Phomvihane Road between the 450 Road traffic lights and the Patuxay monument, continuing to Lane Xang Avenue and 23 Singha Road from the Patuxay monument to the roundabout at That Luang.

In other parts of the city centre, lights will be erected on Nongbone Road from the Nongbone traffic lights to 23 Singha Road; on Mahosot Road from the junction outside the Presidential Office to Mahosot Hospital and the Mekong riverside; from the junction at Chao Anouvong Park to the Pakpasack roundabout; and on Setthathirath Road from the Pakpasak roundabout to the junction at Mahosot.

Upgrade of the fountain at the Patuxay monument and the installation of streetlights on Lane Xang Avenue and Kaysone Phomvihane Road will be completed ahead of National Day.

Power lines for the new streetlights will be laid underground on Lane Xang Avenue, 23 Singha Road, Nongbone Road, Kaysone Phomvihane Road, and at Mahosot. On Setthathirath Road, at Pakpasak and by Chao Anouvong Park the existing power lines will be upgraded to electrify the new lighting system.
Mr Xonglao said the project is being funded by the Chinese government at a cost of 300 million yuan. A total of 87.5 million yuan has been approved this year for the upgrade of the fountain and lighting at the Patuxay monument and the installation of new streetlights on seven roads in the capital.

The city has long been in need of better lighting to make night-time driving safer.

The project also supports Vientiane’s goal to improve lighting in the city, under the slogan Sor Sa Vang. This is one of the six slogans, Hok Sor, that aim to improve the capital, and promote civic pride and social harmony among its residents.
