Until February 20, 2021, Cambodian authorities had succeeded in achieving a great goal : fully controlling the COVID-19 pandemic.
From February 2020 to February 2021, the country had only 454 cases and no deaths.
The government of Cambodia had anticipated the actions to be implemented. Not only has it initiated public awareness campaigns, but it also closed some establishments and ordered other measures.
Above all, from the start, it isolated the country. At land borders, airports, proof of a negative test carried out within 72 hours had to be provided on arrival, a new test was applied and if just one person in the incoming group was found to be positive, the entire group was quarantined for 14 days with retesting on the 13th day.
As a result, during one year, no national cluster was ever detected nor existed. The cases then largely comprised foreigners or Cambodians returning from abroad.
It turned out, on February 20 of this year, that wealthy foreign tourists, who tested positive with the British version of COVID-19, and therefore had to be isolated, bribed the guards to be able to go to a private nightclub where they infected around 80 people from different parts of the country.
This totally irresponsible attitude is the origin of a devastating spread of the British virus with the result that, on May 11, there has been 20,223 cases and 131 deaths.
The government’s measures were calculated and well executed. These are not reckless decisions made by the Cambodian government.
