A bill meant to combat criminal activities, especially the proliferation of digital fraud, through mobile phones, has morphed into a piece of legislation that could potentially be used to stifle legitimate expressions of dissent in the online sphere.

The President is presented with a unique opportunity to preserve and strengthen Philippine democracy, and could surprise even his staunchest critics if he vetoes this SIM Card Registration Act in its present form.

Before the official campaign period for national races opened, the Commission on Elections issued detailed guidelines on the conduct of the campaign. Following a ruling of the Supreme Court that there is no such thing as premature campaigning, the Comelec had to wait until the date designated by law as the start of the campaign period to begin enforcing the rules.

Philippine elections have always been marred by violence, with rivals having no compunction in resorting to murder. Authorities must step up efforts to prevent election violence and bring perpetrators to justice. The same effort must be made to enforce all the rules on fair, orderly and COVID-safe campaigning.

Noong nakaraang Biyernes (Pebrero 4), inilabas ng US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) ang “most wanted” posters ni Pastor Apollo Quiboloy at dalawa niyang followers na sina Teresita Tolibas Dandan at Helen Panilag. Nakasaad sa posters na ang sinumang nakaaalam sa kinaroroonan ni Quiboloy at dalawang kasama nito ay ipagbigay-alam lamang sa pinakamalapit na tanggapan ng FBI. Si Quiboloy ay inaakusahan ng conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion, and sex trafficking of children; sex trafficking by force, fraud and coercion; conspiracy, and bulk cash smuggling.

Walang makapagsasabi kung hanggang saan hahantong ang kasong ito ni Quiboloy pero kung dumating sa punto na kailangang ipatupad ang extradition, dapat makipagtulungan siya at kanyang mga kasama sa prosecution para magkaroon nang pagkakataong maipagtanggol ang sarili sa korte. Ito ang pinakamabuting magagawa
