The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) celebrated the 45th anniversary of the January 7 victory over the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime at the Koh Pich Centre, with CPP President Hun Sen calling on all Cambodians to safeguard the hard-earned peace.

January 7, 1979 was the day the Khmer Rouge regime was overthrown. It was celebrated in the memory of the crimes committed by the Pol Pot genocidal regime and more than 3 million Cambodians died of execution, forced labour, diseases and starvation.

As many as 20,000 Cambodians attended the grand event, including senior CPP officials, government leaders, government officials from government institutions, foreign guests, diplomats, and students.

Mr Hun Sen presided over the ceremony, with the attendance of CPP honorary president Heng Samrin and Prime Minister Hun Manet, who is also a Vice-President. The trio also received baskets of flowers from foreign ambassadors and representatives at the event.
