I ndonesia will press for stronger regional unity and closer coordination at the ASEAN regional meeting in the Philippines this week, as the bloc gears up for talks on the worsening Middle East crisis and strategies to cushion its economic fallout.

Preparations are underway for 11 ASEAN nations as leaders from across the region are expected to map out a joint response to the protracted Middle East conflict, focusing particularly on energy security and food supply resilience.

A series of preliminary events is slated to take place in the coastal city of Cebu before the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit on Friday, including ministerial-level meetings which Foreign Minister Sugiono is set to attend.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said during a briefing on April 30 that the minister has been scheduled to attend four meetings on Thursday, including ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting, ASEAN Political Security Community Council Meeting, ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting and ASEAN Joint Foreign and Economic Ministers Meeting.

“At this summit, Indonesia will underscore a key message, particularly on ASEAN unity and synergy amid current geopolitical challenges,” Yvonne said.

“It’s a key priority for the Indonesian government to ensure that the region and ASEAN member states can respond properly and effectively to the resulting impacts [of current challenges], particularly on energy,” she went on to say.
