Jakarta: Music- UPN Veteran University Choir Group Bags Gold Medals at Asia Pacific Choir Games

Jakarta. The Vocalista Paradisso choir group from Yogyakarta’s National Development University, or UPN Veteran, won three gold medals at the 4th Asia Pacific Choir Games held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on Oct. 19 to 25.

According to an official statement received by the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday (31/10), Vocalista Paradisso, which consisted of 39 members, received two gold medals for the Folklore A Capella category and one for the Mixed Youth Choir category.

Dressed in batik, the group performed the Indonesian national anthem, “Indonesia Raya,” North Sumatran folk song “Sik-Sik Sibatumanikam” and a song called “Lukisan Tanah Air” composed by Yongky Djauhari.

Their preparation, including training and finding sponsors to fund their trip, took around six months.

Last year, the group also won gold medals for Mixed Choir, Folklore, and Gospel and Spiritual categories at the Lanna International Choir Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

“Hopefully what we have achieved can inspire youth out there to be dedicated in their endeavors for Indonesia gain international recognition,” the statement said.
