US (ASEAN) POLITICS: Fil-Am vies for US congressional seat

A Filipino-American doctor won the Democratic primary election in Florida, USA on Tuesday and will vie for the state’s District 1 seat in the House of Representatives in the November general elections.

Jennifer Zimmerman and Republican rival and incumbent Florida District 1 Rep. Matt Gaetz will contest the congressional seat on 6 November.

Zimmerman beat Phil Ehr in the primary 22,410 votes against 14,642. The pediatrician campaigned on a platform of providing affordable healthcare.

Gaetz won the Republican primary against Cris Dosev and John Mills with 65,159 votes.

Zimmerman, who is known in her community as Dr. Z, immigrated to the U.S. 25 years ago after graduating from the University of the East with a medical degree. She has been a resident of Florida since 1997 with her husband and three children.
