HÀ NỘI — People entering Việt Nam, who are fully vaccinated and have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2, can self-quarantine at home instead of having to undergo mandatory centralised quarantine, said Deputy Prime Minister Vũ Đức Đam in a meeting of the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.

Joined by the Ministry of Health and other ministries and departments, the meeting held late Wednesday focused on COVID-19 pandemic control and prevention when receiving Vietnamese nationals and foreigners from abroad.

BANGKOK (AFP) – Facebook parent Meta will ban all pages and accounts belonging to Myanmar military-backed businesses, it said, expanding its restraints on the country’s armed forces.

Myanmar’s secretive military has extensive business interests, with tentacles in industries as diverse as transportation, textiles, tourism and banking. Activists and rights groups said they funded crackdowns and abuses even before the February coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi and launched a bloody crackdown on dissent.

In late February Facebook removed all accounts linked to the military, also known as the Tatmadaw, citing the junta’s use of deadly force against anti-coup demonstrators. It also banned military-linked firms from advertising on its platforms.

Meta “will now also remove Pages, Groups and Accounts representing military-controlled businesses”, it said in a statement on Tuesday.

The decision was “based on extensive documentation by the international community of these businesses’ direct role in funding the Tatmadaw’s ongoing violence and human rights abuses in Myanmar”, it said, adding it would use the report from a 2019 United Nations (UN) fact-finding mission into the military’s economic interests “as the basis” for its actions.

A 50-year-old South Korean filmmaker who has captured the world’s imagination with a dystopian survival drama that throws up uncomfortable questions about contemporary society has been named The Straits Times Asian of the Year.

SINGAPORE – A 50-year-old South Korean film-maker, who captured the world’s imagination with a dystopian survival drama that throws up uncomfortable questions about contemporary society, has been named The Straits Times Asian of the Year.

Every year, the editors of The Straits Times pick a person, a group or an institution that in their judgment has significantly impacted Asia in the year past. Mr Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, was chosen this year for an expression of creativity that, while fictional and not without flaws, holds up a useful mirror to society.

The Netflix series created by Mr Hwang has emerged as more than a mere television show, said the citation to the award.

Man dies after Moderna jab following Sinovac

SAMUT PRAKAN: A man died at his home in Muang district late on Tuesday night shortly after receiving a second dose of Covid-19 vaccine, Moderna, following an initial dose of Sinovac in September.

Police were called to house 66/189 at Moo 5, tambon Bang Muang in Muang district about 12.30am, Pol Capt Adithes Phocharoen, a duty investigator, said on Wednesday.

They found Sithipol Bovornkittipaisal, 26, lying dead on the ground floor of the house. There was no sign of physical assault.

Sithipol’s mother Sopa Khotpakdi, 50, said her son had recieved the first dose of Sinovac vaccine in early September, but did not say where.

He had also placed an order for Moderna vaccine with Synphaet Theparak Hospital. He went to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and was inoculated with the Moderna vaccine.

He returned home with no sign of side effects, she said.

However, late on Tuesday night, while playing on his phone on the second floor of the house, Sithipol began experiencing chest pain and breathing difficulties.

Ms Sopa said she called for an emergency team from Paolo Hospital Samutprakarn. While waiting, relatives carried Sithipol, who was by then unconscious, down to the ground floor.
