EDITORIAL –Protecting the polls’ integrity
January 18, 2022

Some four months to the 2022 national elections comes a disturbing report that could undermine the integrity of this much anticipated poll exercise.

<>

As one candidate puts it, what’s at stake in this election is the will of the people. Upholding that, making sure that the coming elections are fair, honest, and credible, and its results leaving no room for doubt or speculation is, after all, the Comelec’s mandate.

The oppositions are barking on the wrong tree.

Hacking by the BOYS is the way to getting first in the finish line.

FORMER top officials of President Fidel V. Ramos‘ government pledged to support Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo’s bid for the presidency.

The 23 ex-officials included 14 former Cabinet heads.

In a statement released on Thursday, they said they “believe that the country sorely needs a leader who will inspire unity, solidarity and teamwork in the government and among all Filipinos.”

The leader must also “empower our people, especially the disadvantaged and marginalized in society; and bring out the best of servant leadership in government officials and public servants by being the foremost example of integrity, dedication, professionalism, level-headedness, statesmanship, pursuit of excellence, hard work, and true caring and sharing for our fellow Filipinos,” they said.

Robredo, they added, “is the only presidential candidate who possesses the above-described qualities and who can credibly lead us Filipinos closer toward that dream.”

EDITORIAL – No exemption from restrictions

EDITORIAL - No exemption from restrictions

How can unvaccinated officials enforce restrictions on other unvaccinated people? Over the weekend, the undersecretary for barangay affairs said that if he could have his way, village officials who remain unvaccinated against COVID should go on leave during the pandemic or even resign.

<>

The Department of the Interior and Local Government has warned that penalties will be imposed on those who fail to submit the inventory of unvaccinated. The DILG should add that heavier penalties await those who submit inventories that are deliberately inaccurate and leave out unvaccinated barangay officials.

One problem is whether the DILG has the capability to verify the accuracy of the inventories. It can deter deliberate inaccuracies by picking a few barangays at random for verification with local government and health officials. Pandemic restrictions entail heavy sacrifices, and a sure way to promote non-compliance is the selective application of the rules.

The Straits Times says:

Myanmar must show sincerity to engage

1.18.22

Well intentioned as he may have been in deciding to be the first foreign leader to visit Myanmar since last February’s military coup that ousted the democratically elected government, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen may have underestimated the difficulty in prodding the military junta to adopt a more accommodating stance towards Myanmar’s citizens who want democratic rule reinstated. While he got a red carpet welcome, and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing received him wearing civilian clothes – clearly meant to stress his self-appointed role of “prime minister” – the visit may have yielded little for anyone except the junta. Violence between troops and civilians continues unabated.

By reaching out to the generals who have reneged on the five-point consensus that was reached with Asean last April, Mr Hun Sen, whose country is the grouping’s current chair, took a significant risk. Several Asean members are dismayed by his action, and some chose to express it by deciding to shun the meeting of Asean foreign ministers that was scheduled to take place this week in Siem Reap. This led Cambodia to postpone the gathering. The official explanation was that some ministers had difficulty travelling to Cambodia. Since so many Asean meetings have been held by videoconference, including the last summit, that this was not considered as an alternative says much.

COMMENT:
ASEAN are soft in dictatorial countries. It must be re oriented to openly declare that Asean’s ideological princple being followed is a DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM.. and dictatorship is TABOO… Will there be still Asean?

Military deals need scrutiny

On this date each year, the military marks the Royal Thai Armed Forces Day with pomp and pageantry, with soldiers marching to showcase the forces’ strength and solidarity. In the past couple of years, the celebration has improved for the better, with more social campaigns incorporated into the activities for the day, in an effort to keep the military relevant to society in the modern age.

<>

While it is good to see soldiers donating blood, building houses for the poor and evacuating villagers in flooded areas, the armed forces won’t be able to stay relevant without adjusting to be more responsive to public sentiment.

What ever good and better benefit the military does vs. civilian functions…in the nation building…these soldiers are useless when war comes… their mindset training to kill  will go to nothing …
